From December to mid-March, the tin can trail invites you to marvel and admire: there are over 250 artistically stamped cans to discover. A short evening stroll that is well worth it!

Every Friday evening, a pub along the way invites you to stop for a bite to eat and a hot drink.

Real winter experiences

Perfect for families…

…is the sunny Grimmialp winter sports area in Schwenden at the rear of the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley). It doesn’t matter if you or your children are beginners, or if you speed down the slopes like pros, because at Grimmialp there’s a suitable slope for everyone. Little ones can get their first taste of skiing at Gödu’s-Tellerlift (Gödu’s button lift), and patient ski instructors will show them the secret to mastering stem turns. All other skiers and snowboarders take the chairlift to reach the winter sports area, where perfectly prepared slopes as well as freeride descents await them. In the meantime, grandma and grandad can sit on a sun terrace at the valley station and observe the hustle and bustle on the slopes.

The wild landscape of Grimmialp replaces virtual reality, so prevalent nowadays, in a charming way. Here you can have real experiences off the beaten track, the moment you leave the lively Grimmialp either on your cross-country skis, on snowshoes or on foot for a winter hike.

A lot of snow sports in a compact area

Right next to the valley station of the Grimmialpbergbahnen (Grimmialp chairlift) you can find the Swiss Ski School beginners’ area. This is also where the Kinderlift Egg (Egg button lift) and the three-person chairlift starts. They bring you up to the lower Stierenberg with ease. The Nydegg–upper Stierenberg ski lift completes this small, but beautiful ski area. The slopes are mainly easy to intermediate. However, both black slopes and the freeride descents are quite challenging.

Grimmialp facts & figures:

  • Three-person chairlift, 1 ski lift, 1 button lift

  • 10 km ski slopes (of which 1 km in the lower area with snow-making facilities): 40 % blue, 50 % red and 10 % black slopes

  • 10 km winter hiking trails

  • 4.7 km snowshoe trail

  • Children's playground «Schlaraffenland» (land of milk and honey)

  • Freeride descents

  • Swiss Ski School Diemtigtal

  • Paragliding starting and landing point right next to the chairlift

  • Sports shop with rental of winter sports equipment at the valley station

  • Grimmialp is easy to reach: From Berne, it takes 55 minutes and from Basel 1 hour 50 minutes by car. You can also reach the valley station by public transport.

«Kinderlift Egg» (Egg button lift), the authentic

This private button lift has been running since 1967 and was renewed in 1972. It has 36 buttons over a length of 250 m. The button lift still runs between 70 and 100 days each and every season thanks to the loving care of its owners, the Erb family. As a young boy aged only 13, Gottfried Erb, son of the constructor, and his siblings were responsible for working at the button lift. Later he was supported by his wife Fränzi. Today they have an employee, who helps from time to time. This makes Godi probably one of the longest-serving button lift workers ever. His son Alexander has now joined the company in its third generation. According to his mother Fränzi, Alexander is the friendliest of them all with children!

The perfect slope for sledging

The area around the Kinderlift Egg (Egg button lift) is perfect for the very youngest family members. Children can tumble around in the snow playground Schlaraffenland (land of milk and honey) and try their first run on a sledge. Take a break on one of the nearby restaurants’ sun terraces. > sledging.

Grimmialp is also the starting point for cross-country skiing

Two cross-country skiing trails, «Tiermatti» and «Grimmimutz» start at Schwenden. They offer you perfect cross-country skiing fun from sunny and easy terrain up to more demanding and technically difficult sections. Follow the trail along mountain streams, through forests and meadows. A real winter fairytale landscape that’s so inviting. > cross-country skiing

Authentic winter events

Grimmialp stands for authentic winter events. Each year on the 28 December, you can end the year with a beautiful torchlight hike together with like-minded people. It feels almost meditative, with the snow crunching under your feet. The magical atmosphere is completed by the torchlit shadows which give just a glimpse of your surroundings.

The winter bonfire’s flames illuminate the dark night. Enjoy the beautiful winter night around the bonfire together with other visitors, marvel at the Swedish Candles and warm yourself up with a hot punch and a Cheesbrätel (bread with melted cheese) while listening to the live band.
