For young & old
Wintertime is sledging time
Sledging is the classic winter sport. It doesn’t matter if you have a wooden or plastic sledge or a locally produced Diemtigtaler sledge. You can bring your own or rent one. The Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley) offers runs for all levels, from thrilling to relaxed descents. Choose between prepared sledging runs, car-free mountain paths or the areas around the children’s playgrounds. Enjoy a light-hearted and exciting excursion. Sledging is always an experience for everyone.
Sledging in the moonlight
Racing down to the valley at night time under the light of the stars and the moon is a unique experience. Every Friday evening, starting from the end of December, when snow conditions allow it and in fine weather, the sledging run at Wiriehorn is open. The chairlift takes you up to the start with ease. How about a tasty Fondue in a cosy atmosphere at Berghotel Wiriehorn (Wiriehorn mountain hotel) before sledging down the mountain? At the valley station of the Wiriehornbahnen you can buy evening tickets with the Fondue already included. Our recommendation based on our long experience of night sledging in the dark: Take your head torch with you because the sledging run is not illuminated.
Sledging: a simple guide
You don’t forget what you learnt as a child. However, if your last sledge run was a while ago or if you’re sitting on a sledge for the first time, start cautiously. There are just a few things you’ll need: warm winter clothes, gloves, a helmet, goggles, a head torch if you’re sledging in the night and last but not least a sledge. You’ll find the sledge of your choice in one of the local sports shops which are located at the valley stations and the chairlifts. And then, of course, there has to be enough snow. The sledging run ends after a little over 5 km at the valley station. The ideal ticket for a fun day is the day ticket for sledging. Wiriehorn is the perfect place for sledge-lovers. Little ones can also sledge or snow-bob at the beginners’ area at the Ferienzentrum Wiriehorn (Wiriehorn holiday centre).

Sledging in the Diemtigtal for children and families
At the button lift Grimmialp children can tumble around in the > snow playground Schlaraffenland (land of milk and honey). The gentle slope is ideal for an easy descent on your sledge. There’s also a new addition to the > area Springenboden: a big snow pile at the side of the ski slope where children can romp. Whether at Grimmialp or at Springenboden, take a break on one of the nearby restaurants’ sun terraces or warm yourself up inside.
A souvenir from the Diemtigtal: the Diemtigtaler sledge
Very special souvenirs from the Diemtigtal (Diemtig valley) are the two types of Diemtigtaler sledge (Diemtigtaler Schlitten and Diemtigtaler Rodel). These manoeuvrable sledges are constructed from beech and partially from ash wood. They were developed in the valley and are nowadays produced by the company Paradox in Oey. If you wish to add more comfort to your sledge, choose modifications such as a wicker seat, a child’s seat or detachable plastic runners for even smoother gliding on wet snow.
